river deep is a well written appreciation of Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound, as demonstrated by this massive production of Ike & Tina Turner’s “River Deep-Mountain High” by Darlene Love on The Letterman Show.  The blogger, emscee, while not defending Spector’s dark side (“And one night at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after-party, I saw him [Spector] drunk and verbally berating perfect strangers. It was sad and unsettling.”) speculates “It was a loving recreation, and you just knew that Paul Shaffer, a Spector fan and friend, assembled it to remind us that the tragic, frail guy at the defense table once created moments of true majesty.”

In any case, the video and post are effective reminders why Leonard Cohen, the Beatles, and other performers solicited Spector’s skills.
