Digg, Wikipedia, And The Myth Of Web 2.0 Democracy
Chris Wilson at Slate Magazine posits that a small elite of users run projects like Digg and Wikipedia. To establish that premise as sufficiently contrarian to qualify as a Slate article, Wilson pretends (he can’t really believe this, can he? that would just be too sad) that we in the hoi polloi either desperately delude ourselves or are deluded by the media-administered matrix into believing the propaganda about the Web 2.0 democratization of the Internet. How many folks have the time, energy, and desire to jump through the hoops to become a high level administrator at Wikipedia? And even if it were possible, why, for goodness sake, would that make Wikipedia better? Still, the article is an entertaining read, especially if one thinks of it as a letter to the editor written to your town newspaper by one of those colorful, off-kilter, slightly wacky local characters.
